“Reassurance”: Pregnant healthcare professionals weigh odds before vaccination with COVID-19

After conducting her own research and seeing a doctor with a team at the University of North Carolina, Yoxheimer decided to be vaccinated and received her first dose of Pfizer vaccine in mid-December.
“Vaccination gave me a sense of security that I hadn’t really felt for a long time,” she said.

It also provided relief to Dr. Jesse Hart, who chose to be vaccinated by a pediatrician at WakeMed’s outpatient clinic. She is pregnant with her second child, a boy, who is due to give birth in February.
“I felt this euphoria after taking the first dose,” Hart said. “I was very excited and at that point I just knew it was the right decision for me.”
However, it was complicated to reach that decision.
Hart said her husband had been infected with the virus in the summer, just weeks after she learned she was pregnant. She and their toddler were isolated from him for nearly two weeks.
She said he had only mild symptoms, and later she tested positive for the COVID-19 antibody.
Still, when she learned that she was ready to vaccinate, she hesitated thinking she might wait to vaccinate until she gave birth to her baby.
“I tried to rely on’oh, deliver it right away’when deciding whether to get the vaccine right away,” she said. “But the fact of the matter is that with COVID things are so dangerous so far that we can’t wait.”
She also said she decided to get the Pfizer vaccine after conducting a survey and asking her healthcare provider for advice and hopes to get a second vaccination before giving birth.
“Hopefully I want to be able to pass on some of my protection to my baby,” she said.
These women at the forefront of the pandemic said they were forced to straddle the line between the donor and the patient and made personal decisions that they felt were right for themselves, their families and their patients.
“It was a really rewarding time in nursing to be able to care for these people, these patients,” said Yoxheimer. “If I wasn’t pregnant, I wouldn’t have hesitated. I think it’s very safe and effective. If I wasn’t pregnant, I wouldn’t have reconsidered it. About that.”
