Oregon hospitals want COVID Vaccine Clinic to boost slow start
Salem Health wants to work with Marion County to vaccinate 250 people per hour at the clinic.
Salem, Oregon — Several hospitals in Oregon have organized vaccine clinics for priority groups to improve the slow deployment of state COVID-19 vaccination.
So far, Oregon has vaccinated about 65,000 people, and about 1,000 have both vaccinated.

Lean McDonald, Secretary-General of Kaiser’s Willa Metter Lutheran Retirement Community, received the vaccine there on Thursday.
“I have a responsibility to be a good example for staff and residents,” McDonald’s said.

Joshua Free, Chief Pharmacy Officer at Salem Health, said about 250 people are vaccinated per hour at the clinic.

You do not need insurance to receive the vaccine for free, but you will be asked to bring your ID and insurance information. You also need to answer questions about how to meet your Phase 1a eligibility requirements.
The clinic will be open next time:
- Thursday, January 7th and Friday, January 8th — 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
- Saturday, January 9th and Sunday, January 10th — 8 am-5pm
- Monday, January 11th — 8:00 am to 6:00 pm
OHSU will offer a similar clinic on the South Waterfront campus in Portland, probably by Saturday.
Focus on those who work as home caregivers.
The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) represents approximately 32,000 home care workers throughout Oregon. Melissa Unger of SEIU said many of these workers were invisible during the pandemic.
“They don’t have a centralized employer,” she explained.
Within a few days, SEIU and OHSU came up with plans for a vaccination clinic to help fill the gap.
“If we don’t plan, it’s hard to line up,” Unger said, explaining that the union would connect with members to schedule vaccinations.
“No one in the hospital industry has experienced a pandemic,” added Joe Ness of OHSUCOO. “This requires us to reinvent everything from the beginning during the crisis itself.”
Returning to Marion County, Lean McDonald left the trade fair on Thursday and was vaccinated with his first vaccination.
“I didn’t even feel it!” McDonald told the clinician.
She said the Willa Metter Lutheran retirement community, which she supports, is on the national CDC list to obtain vaccine priority from the CVS. But she wanted to be shot faster in order to continue to protect the vulnerable people around her. This reminds us of the safety of the vaccine and our hopes for a more “normal” tomorrow.
“I have faith and I believe it is the right thing to do,” she said.
