Doctors in South Florida have made medical advances in the treatment of severe cases of Covid.health
Miami (WFOR)-Experimental treatments involving stem cells have been incredibly successful in treating severe cases of COVID, doctors in South Florida say.
Patients from Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami participated in the study. Many of them suffered from acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
“I think this will be a turning point,” said Dr. Camilo Ricordi, director of the Cell Transplant Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
According to Ricordi, a breakthrough treatment uses stem cells from the baby’s umbilical cord.
This treatment safely reduced the risk of death and shortened the recovery time for the most ill patients.
“We have published a study that uses stem cells from the umbilical cord of a healthy newborn. We usually throw away the placenta that was discarded after birth. But we are extracted from that umbilical cord. It uses expanding cells, which allows it to generate and deliver therapeutic doses to more than 10,000 patients from a single umbilical cord, which is an amazing result, “he said.
Ricordi, one of the lead researchers in the study, said it makes sense to treat patients with coronavirus with these mesenchymal stem cells.

In a double-blind study of 24 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome, either stem cells or placebo were injected twice at intervals of several days.

Researchers have found that patients treated with stem cells have a 91% survival rate.
Ricordi said these stem cells may restore a normal immune response and promote tissue regeneration.
When a person develops ARDS, the lungs become severely inflamed and fluid accumulates in the lungs.
According to Ricordi, ARDS patients usually undergo invasive treatment, but not for these stem cells.
“These cells injected into the IV proceed naturally in a very simple procedure that does not require an invasive procedure. Blood transfusions can be directed to the lungs,” he explained. “The cells go to the lungs, and that was just an amazing kind of result, and we are very excited to take the next step.”
