NI “Worst Scenario” Experienced Pandemic-O’Neill

Northern Ireland is currently experiencing the worst pandemic scenario, the Deputy Prime Minister warned.

Michelle O’Neill said the disastrous predictions made in March last year of potential pressures facing healthcare services in the region are now being realized.

Ms. O’Neill said Northern Ireland has passed the peak of a new infection with the current wave of Covid-19, but the resulting surge in hospitalization has yet to come.

Her rigorous assessment was done after the director of health warned that the number of Covid-19 patients being treated in the hospital could double by the third week of January.

The Northern Ireland hospital network was under intense pressure over the weekend, and two medical trusts urged off-duty staff to report their attendance.

This situation was most extreme in the Southern Trust region, where Covid-19 infection rates are currently highest in Northern Ireland.

During the weekend, Newly’s Craig Gabon Area Hospital and Daisy Hill Hospital were at risk of being attacked by new cases.

Off-duty staff coming to treat the influx of patients helped avoid declaring a serious incident.

Enniskillen’s South West Acute Hospital, located in the Western Trust area, also asked non-working staff to report to the workplace in case it needed to start accepting inpatients from the Southern Trust.

The patient’s diversion to enniskillen was not ultimately necessary.

“We expected the weekend to progress, but I think it’s still very tough and very alarming,” O’Neill said.

“We are now at the limit of a pandemic. This is the worst situation we have ever experienced from the beginning.

“I think you’re witnessing this scenario, which was predicted to be the worst scenario at the beginning of March last year, but it’s a real experience now.”

Ms. O’Neill told the BBC Radio Ulster that she could not rule out a potential extension of the region’s current blockade, which is scheduled to end in the first week of February. She said all the options were left on the table.
