31 residents received false COVID-19 results, says Hamilton Institute-Hamilton
According to a spokesperson for the Hamilton Regional Clinical Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP), many false results from the COVID-19 test in the Hamilton region in late December resulted in an apology and 31 follow-ups.
In a Sunday release, a spokesman for St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton said he revealed an inaccurate test and contacted everyone who received the wrong results.
“We sincerely apologize for affecting those who received the wrong test results,” said Dr. Marek Sumieha, Interim Chief of HRLMP.
Tests of the questions were collected from Hamilton, Burlington, and the surrounding area for two days, December 30th and December 31st.
The 16 people who were initially said to be negative for COVID-19 were later said to be actually positive after the mistake was discovered. The other 15 received positive results at first, but later said they were negative.
“All individuals who received incorrect test results were contacted by a public health or infectious disease physician to provide guidance,” the lab said in its release.
To date, HRLMP has performed more than 350,000 COVID-19 tests in the Hamilton region, processing approximately 2,500 tests daily.
The Lab Initiative is a joint program run by St. Joseph Healthcare Hamilton and Hamilton Health Sciences.
