5 cases of COVID-19 mutation confirmed by MN | Coronavirus
The first reported COVID-19 variant in the United Kingdom in September 2020 was detected on Saturday, January 9, 2021 in five residents of Minnesota. Residents live in four different counties in the Twin Cities Metro Area.
Residents aged 15-37 years, atypical cases were discovered by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) Public Health Institute and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
MDH has investigated the origin of variants in each case in Minnesota. According to MDH, so far, two cases have traveled abroad, one did not travel and the other two had unknown travel history. They are in the process of re-interviewing five residents for more information.
“It’s important to note that variants of this virus have been found in other states in the United States, so I was hoping that the virus would be found in Minnesota. That’s where it is now. Knowing this does not change current public health recommendations, “says state epidemiologist Ruth Linfield.
As of Friday, January 8, the CDC reported 63 variant cases in the United States. This number does not yet reflect the five Minnesota cases, as the data are updated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday by 7 pm. CDC data show that as of Friday, 32 of the 63 variant cases reported were in California and 22 were in Florida.
“This virus makes it very difficult to tell if you or your neighbors are infected, this strain or another, so we all have our own to protect ourselves and each other. We need to play a role, “said MDH Infectious Disease Director Chris Elesmann.
The variants are more contagious, but less serious, Linfield said. Adhering to state guidelines, such as wearing a face cover and keeping a social distance, is most effective for variants.
