Live Update: COVID-19 cases, Minnesota trends
The latest updates for COVID-19 in Minnesota and Wisconsin are:
St. Paul, Minnesota — Monday, January 11
- Bars and restaurants open indoor dining with 50% capacity
- 5 new COVID-19 strains confirmed by MN
- Due to MDH technical issues, uppercase and lowercase letters are artificially lowered
- Health officials report “uplift” in post-vacation COVID cases
- Minnesota is still planning to complete Phase 1a by the end of January
Minnesota health officials held a state-wide COVID-19 and a media briefing call to update the general public about the first new variant identified in the United Kingdom.
Five cases of a variant called B.1.1.7 were reported in Minnesota over the weekend.
Minnesota Health Department (MDH) Commissioner Jan Malcolm said the low number of four deaths reported on Monday was welcome, but it does not necessarily indicate that the number will continue to decline. Absent.
“It’s often a relic of a weekend report from the morgue,” Malcolm said. Unfortunately, the other low days haven’t turned into a “trend” lately, she said.
According to Malcolm, MDH continues to monitor a positive test and an increase in new COVID-19 cases.
Sara Vetter, assistant director of MDH Public Health Lab, joined the phone to talk about the new stock of COVID-19 currently being identified in Minnesota.
Five people from four different counties tested positive for the new variant, Better said. Four were identified through the MDH Public Lab and one through the CDC collaboration. According to MDH, the counties were Hennepin, Dakota, Carver and Ramsey, two of whom lived in the same household.
MDH Infectious Disease Director Kris Ehresmann warned that new variants have been identified only in these counties so far, but health officials are confident that they are more widespread.
“It circulates in Minnesota,” Ehresmann said.
Cases were 15-37 years old, with all onset from December 16th to December 31st. No one was hospitalized. Two reported overseas travel, one did not travel, and two had unknown travel history. MDH continues to investigate their exposure and their close contact.
Authorities still don’t know why the new variants are affecting young people more, Better said.
“In general, the virus affects the age group more, so this variant follows that pattern,” she said.
“I expected the virus to be found in Minnesota at some point,” she added. “Knowing that it’s here now doesn’t change our public health recommendations.”
The new variants will spread faster, but they don’t seem to be that dangerous, Better said. Health officials also believe that the current COVID-19 vaccine is effective against new strains.
When asked if a vaccine was needed each year, Eresman pointed out that experts do not yet know how long immunity will last after someone becomes infected with COVID-19.
“Because of the long protection period, we may need to be vaccinated every year,” she said. However, Eresman acknowledged that new variants, as well as influenza vaccinations, may drive the need for regular vaccines.
“We are continually screening for new variants,” Malcolm said. “So we’ve been doing that, and we’re going to do it.”
According to Malcolm, MDH expects new, faster-spreading variants to drive an increase in COVID-19 cases in Minnesota, coupled with increased indoor time this winter.
According to the CDC, 63 new variants have been identified in eight states, Better said.
Regarding Minnesota’s progress in vaccination, Malcolm acknowledged that not all aspects are under the control of MDH.
“Are we happy?” She said. “No. I want to speed up every step in the process whenever possible.”
Malcolm argued that interstate comparisons of vaccine progress were not necessarily “apples to apples,” but health officials “want and intended” to improve interstate comparisons of vaccine progress. I have. “
The latest COVID-19 data, reported Monday by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), show the lowest number of cases, deaths, and test volumes in recent memory, partly due to technical glitches. I am.
MDH states that 980 cases of coronavirus were recorded in the past day, based on the results of 15,980 cases (14,993 PCR, 987 antigens) processed in private and state laboratories. Health officials consider a positive PCR test to be a confirmed COVID case and a positive antigen test to be a possible case.
Since the pandemic began, the state has reported a total of 437,552 positive tests (16,836 from antigen tests).
Four more Minnesotas died of COVID-19, bringing the total death toll to 5,711. This is the first single-digit number of deaths since nine people died of the virus on November 2.
MDH spokesman Doug Schultz explains that due to delays in loading files containing tests from Sunday, those results were not reflected in Monday’s report, artificially creating lower numbers. According to Schultz, there are 558 test results from the files included in Tuesday’s report, and tomorrow’s number of cases is artificially high.
“The 558 positive tests for that file represent both new COVID cases and iterative tests for known cases, so the number of new cases represented by that file (reported on Tuesday) is final. It is important to know that it will be less than 558. “
Vaccinations given to vulnerable groups, frontline workers, and first responders are currently sitting at 147,645.
The number of patients admitted to the entire state with COVID-19 continues to decline steadily. As of Sunday, 686 beds were used to treat coronavirus patients, of which 141 were in the ICU. Hennepin County has the highest COVID activity in the state, with 91,060 and 1,447 deaths, Ramsey County with 39,054 and 722, Dakota County with 32,250 and 309, and Anoka County with 30,430 and 347. it is continuing.

A total of 22,378 people have been hospitalized with the coronavirus since the outbreak of the pandemic, accounting for about 4.4% of the total number of people diagnosed with the virus, Wisconsin health officials said.
Of the cases identified in Wisconsin, 19% are 20-29 years old, 16% are 30-39 years old, 15% are 50-59 years old, and 14% are 40-49 years old. An estimated 11% are 10 to 10 years old. And 19, and another 11% are between 60 and 69.
As of Sunday, Milwaukee County reported a maximum of 88,939 confirmed cases, with 995 deaths. Walkisha County reported 36,362 confirmed cases and 373 deaths, Dane County reported 35,391 confirmed cases and 211 deaths, and Brown County reported 27,535 cases and 168 deaths. Reported.

The Minnesota Ministry of Health reported 2,165 new COVID-19 cases and 44 deaths on Sunday.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Sunday’s death has brought the total number of people in Minnesota to 5,707. Of those deaths, 3,653, or 64% of them, are associated with people in a long-term care or life support environment.
With 2,165 newly reported cases, Minnesota totaled 436,572. The new case on Sunday is based on the results of 40,189 tests (34,515 PCRs and 5,674 antigens). Health officials consider a positive PCR test to be a confirmed COVID case and a positive antigen test to be a possible case.
MDH updates hospital capacity data on weekdays. As of Thursday, 759 COVID-19 patients occupied hospital beds throughout the state, 130 of whom were being treated in ICU beds. Hospital occupancy rates across the Twin Cities Metro appear to be stable, with only 3.6% (133) of non-ICU beds open and 7.1% (49) of ICU beds available. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, a total of 22,763 people have been hospitalized in Minnesota and 4,770 in the ICU.
At this point, 414,756 people who tested positive for the virus were fully recovered and did not require quarantine.
Minnesota has also passed a notable milestone with more than 100,000 vaccinations. As of Sunday, 132,280 people have been vaccinated, and MDH officials say their numbers are increasing.
Young adults still account for the highest number of coronavirus cases in the state, with 44,112 and 3 deaths from 20 to 24 years and 39,393 and 6 deaths from 25 to 29 years. The largest group of deaths includes 85 to 89, with only 5,757 diagnosed cases and 1,075 deaths.
