Covid-19 Treatment Synairgen is promising and may keep patients away from ventilators
Synairgen, a treatment that reduces hospital stays in Covid-19 patients, is promising in a phase III trial that began Tuesday.
Southampton-based company Synairgen is conducting a trial of the drug in 610 patients. Previous tests have shown that hospital stays are reduced by 80%. Reported by Pharma Times.. The patients selected are those in need of oxygen supplementation, the report states.
SNG001 is an inhaled formulation of interferon beta-1a, a naturally occurring protein that is thought to initiate the body’s antiviral response. Widely used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, naturally occurring proteins are understood to stimulate the immune system and stimulate cells to fight the coronavirus.
Synairgen previously published preliminary results for a phase II trial in Covid-19 patients admitted in July 2020.
According to Pharma Times, the risk of developing serious illness (needs ventilation or death) during the treatment period of this study (Days 1-16) is SNG001 compared to patients receiving placebo. There was a significant 79% reduction in patients who received the drug.
Synairgen has appointed Parexel Biotech to assist in conducting large-scale trials, and many UK sites are now in operation. Currently, additional sites in the US and EU are expected to follow.
The study, called SG018, is being conducted in approximately 20 countries and aims to enroll a total of 610 COVID-19 patients in need of oxygen supplementation. Synairgen is also conducting an ongoing Phase II trial of SNG001 in unhospitalized “risk” Covid-19 patients.
