WHO convenes an early emergency committee on coronavirus variants

The World Health Organization Emergency Committee will meet Thursday in the first half of two weeks to discuss new coronavirus variants from South Africa and the United Kingdom. These variants are rapidly spreading to at least 50 countries and sounding widespread alarms.
Newly identified variants, which appear to be far more infectious than the strains that emerged in China in 2019, have forced many countries to blockade new due to the surge in virus numbers.
The committee usually meets every three months, but WHO said the Executive Secretary had advanced the meeting “to consider issues that needed urgent discussion.”
“These are recent variants and considerations regarding vaccination and the use of test certificates for overseas travel,” a global organization said Wednesday.
There is concern that new mutations may reduce the effectiveness of certain vaccines and undermine the hope that vaccination will provide the best hope of recovery from a pandemic.
