Following new guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), the drug, known as nilaparib, will be available to patients with stage III and IV ovarian cancer from the first treatment.
Previously, it was available only to a small group of patients whose cancer had recurred after treatment.
According to the drug company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), it is estimated that about 3,000 women have access to the drug each year, which has been shown to significantly slow the progression of advanced cancer.

“Since the introduction of the chemotherapeutic drug paclitaxel-Taxol-in the 1990s, no breakthrough drug has been available to so many people.”
There are about 7,500 new cases of ovarian cancer each year in the UK, of which nearly 60% are diagnosed late.
Nilaparib is a type of targeted cancer drug called a PARP inhibitor that works by blocking the self-repair of cancer cells.
This is a maintenance drug. That is, drugs are usually given after the first round of treatment to prevent or delay the recurrence of the cancer.
Unlike other maintenance therapies, GSK states that patients can be given niraparib with or without a defect in the BRCA gene, increasing their risk of breast and ovarian cancer.
Jonathan Lederman, a professor of oncology at the Cancer Institute at University College London, said: “Today’s decision marks a turning point in the treatment of advanced ovarian cancer and enables clinicians to use important treatments in the early stages of treatment for more women than ever before.
“This can significantly increase the chances of slowing the progression of cancer in women. It can be months, or even years longer than it is now.”
Enfield’s Lyndsey Hadden, 64, has been taking niraparib since November 2019.
She said:’I was diagnosed four years ago and started taking Nilaparib after ovarian cancer had spread to my brain.
“After two brain surgeries and additional radiation therapy, niraparib gave me another lease of life.
“It’s not much more stringent than some other treatments and I’m doing really well.
“That meant that if the blockade allowed, we could return to life like yoga, walking, swimming!”
The new Nice guidelines will be replicated soon in Wales and Northern Ireland, but a decision will be made in Scotland later this year.
