Indiana COVID Update: IN reports 4,744 new COVID-19 cases, 42 coronavirus deaths
Overall, 8,872 Indiana residents have died of COVID-19, and 583,160 have been infected with COVID-19 since the outbreak of the pandemic.
Health officials say the state’s most recently recorded 7-day positive COVID-19 test rate is 14.6%. Health officials say more than 6 million tests have been performed.
Indiana has also expanded access to the COVID-19 vaccine.
Indiana Expands COVID-19 Vaccine to Hoosiers 70 and above
According to the Indiana Department of Health, Indiana continues to expand access to shots, allowing Hoosiers over the age of 70 to register for coronavirus vaccination.
The vaccine has been made available to Indiana residents over the age of 80 after the first dose was deployed to Indiana healthcare professionals and nursing home residents and staff last Friday.

The Indiana Department of Health announced on Wednesday that reservations for people over the age of 70 can be made on the website ourshot.in.gov or by calling the state’s 2-1-1 telephone assistance service.
State officials will release more information about the vaccine expansion during a news briefing Wednesday afternoon.
Officials: More contagious viral variants found in Indiana
State health officials say a more contagious variant of the coronavirus, first identified in the United Kingdom, was found in Indiana late last year.
According to the Indiana Department of Health, the variant was identified by state agency laboratories and tests by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, but Monday’s announcement did not include additional information about its findings in Indiana. ..
The variant “doesn’t cause more serious infections, but spreads much more easily,” state health commissioner Chris Box said in a statement.
She states that this finding means that it is “more important than ever” for Hoosiers to continue wearing masks and take other precautions.
