Deaths rise by 14 as positive cases of Covid-19 show slow decline
After Delaware on Friday reached the sad milestone of 1,002 deaths from coronavirus complications, another 14 residents succumbed to complications from the disease.
The new deaths boosted the toll from the virus to 1,016 as of Friday night.
The newest deaths came amid a few signs that the state may have seen the worst from the holiday surge in cases. At the same time, concern is growing about a new, faster-spreading strain of Covid-19.While the state is now testing for the new strain that came from the United Kingdom, no cases have yet been tied to the variant.
The deaths included 10 individuals from New Castle County, 3 from Sussex County and 1 from Kent County. The individuals ranged in age from their 60s to their 100s, and 8 were residents of long-term care facilities. The deaths increased Delaware’s total number of COVID-related deaths to 1,016.
A total of 650 new positive cases were reported bringing the overall total to 69,372.In recent days, the average number of new cases has moved below the 700 mark. The number of daily cases remains several times the figure reported when in the summer.
“On this day that we pass the heartbreaking milestone of 1,000 COVID-related deaths in Delaware, our hearts go out to all the families and friends who have lost a loved one to this disease,” Delaware Division of Public Health Director Dr. Karyl Rattay stated after Delaware reached the milestone. “Even as our response continues to slow the spread of Covid-19 and to increase the pace of our vaccinations, we pause today to remember all of the precious souls lost to Covid-19. May their memory be a blessing to their families and friends.”
Hospitalizations s also showed a downward trend at 451, down 10 from the previous day, with 54 in critical condition. While the number of people in the hospital is down from the peak earlier this week, the figure is still well above the spring high of more than 330.
