California overtakes New York as the epicenter of the US Covid crisis
California has overtaken New York as the state of the United States with the highest number of coronavirus deaths during a pandemic. This reflects the impact of increasing cases and hospitalization over several months.
On Saturday, the California Department of Health reported an additional 669 deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in the most populous US state to 32,960. According to state data, New York’s total death toll has reached 32,725 after an additional 157 were reported in the past day.
New York has been the top-ranked state in coronavirus deaths since late March, with the northeastern state recording most of its deaths at the start of the most devastating pandemic. But California has experienced the worst crisis in the last two months. The situation became especially serious in Los Angeles. Los Angeles became the first county in the United States to exceed more than one million cases on Saturday since the pandemic began.
