Dublin researchers may have discovered new treatments for difficult-to-treat types of breast cancer
Researchers have discovered potential treatments for breast cancer that are difficult to treat.
Scientists at the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) have discovered a molecule that can selectively kill cells in difficult-to-treat subtypes of breast cancer. This is a discovery that may lead to new treatments.
Triple-negative breast cancer is a subtype of breast cancer that is primarily treated with chemotherapy.
However, up to 70 pc of patients with this form of cancer develop resistance to treatment.
As a result, researchers are looking for alternative ways to treat cancer.
They decided to test various molecules to see if any of them could selectively kill cancer cells while preserving healthy cells.
Researchers at the RCSI University of Medical and Health Sciences have discovered a specific molecule that can do this, BAS-2, and published their work in the current edition. Science Advances..
“Our current goal is to develop small molecules into more drug-like compounds and assess the availability of new features that have the potential to improve patient treatment.“Dr. Tríona Ní Chonghaile, Physiology and Medical Physics Research Author and RCSI Lecturer, said.
Researchers were also trying to better understand how the molecule killed cancer cells. They were able to confirm that it was due to an enzyme called HDAC6 contained in the cells.
For the first time, they were able to identify that HDAC6 plays an important role in altering the energy of these breast cancer cells.
RCSI researchers are currently filing patents related to this study and are looking for industry partners to further develop this treatment.
The study was funded by the Wellcome Trust Seed Awards, the L’Oreal-UNESCO Women’s Science Program, and the Irish Science Foundation’s Future Frontier Program.
Triple-negative breast cancer is usually treated with chemotherapy and is often treated after the patient first undergoes a mastectomy or breast mass removal.
According to the Irish Cancer Society, about one-eighth of breast cancers are triple negative. It is more common in young and black women.
