Texas announces COVID-19 vaccine allocation for the week of January 18
Texas will receive 333,650 initial COVID-19 vaccines this week. The Texas Department of Health has instructed the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ship these doses to 260 providers throughout Texas. This includes 79 hub providers focusing on vaccination efforts in large communities, and Texas-based healthcare workers, caregiver residents, people over the age of 65, and medical conditions at high risk of hospitalization. Last week, Texas became the first state to receive one million doses of vaccine, and all 254 counties were vaccinated. In addition to the first dose above, the state has ordered about 500,000 doses intended as a second dose for those who were first vaccinated a few weeks ago.
Vaccines remain limited based on the manufacturer’s production capacity, so it will take time for Texas to receive sufficient vaccines for all people in the preferred population who wish to be vaccinated. Supply is expected to increase in the coming months, and additional vaccines are in clinical trials and may be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
