Are you struggling to get a YK vaccine appointment? This is an update.
NWT health officials apologized for being fully booked this week as Yellowknife over the age of 60 reported difficulty in booking a vaccine against Covid-19.
In a statement published on social media but not widely distributed, health officials contacted anyone about “very high demand” but some residents simply get their shots. He said he explained why he couldn’t.
Residents were silent for a few days after explaining to the cabin radio that no one could answer the phone and filling out an online form requesting a callback.
On Wednesday, health officials admitted that there was no room for anyone else to book.
“During the week of January 18-22, 1,000 slots were available for booking Covid vaccines at Yellowknife for a priority population of 60 or more. These were filled with the callback requests we had already received. This week is fully booked because of it. ” Authorities Facebook Post read.
Authorities have effectively told residents to quit calling and instead use an online booking platform that has not yet been launched.
“The easiest way to get a reservation is to book online when the option is ready,” the authorities wrote. He didn’t say when it would be.
“We can’t book any more until the date / location of the next clinic is confirmed. We plan to make this announcement later this week,” he continued.
Whenever there is a next clinic, “we have enough plans to ensure that everyone in Yellowknife’s 60+ priority groups has the opportunity,” officials said.
It was not clear whether the need to increase reservations dedicated to this priority group would hurt other groups.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the phone backlog, but we promise to ensure that you have the opportunity to receive your booking. We will work quickly to make it available through a simple online booking process. The official statement has ended.
Demand was high on the first day as a Fort Simpson clinic reported a vaccine shortage, causing dissatisfaction among some seniors in Yellowknife.
“We need to close the vaccine clinic early today,” health officials reported in another update to Fort Simpson residents “incredibly high demand.”
According to officials, the clinic needed to be restocked and was scheduled to operate until an extended time from 8 am to 8 pm Thursday to accommodate everyone.
“We will have enough vaccines for everyone,” the authorities pledged.
What is your target?
The NWT has set a goal of immunizing 75% of eligible adults against Covid-19. Dr. Kami Kandra, Chief Public Health Officer of the region, believes that at least 70 percent must be vaccinated to provide herd immunity and relative safety from the virus.
However, it is difficult to determine the exact number behind the NWT’s 75% goal.
There are multiple ways to define the phrase “qualified adult” that changed last week, and there are multiple ways to reach 75%, depending on the base number used for the total adult population of the NWT.
Uncertainty is important because it affects the population’s ability to easily measure the success of local vaccination programs.
The region reports the target as a percentage (75%), but the progress of vaccination is reported by personnel (1,893 as of Monday), which makes direct assessment difficult.
When asked about the specific number of people the area would like to get vaccinated this week, Damian Healy, a spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Services, did not answer directly. Instead, the department focused on the amount of vaccine provided.
“The federal government has promised 51,600 doses, which is enough vaccine to give 25,800 people the two doses they need,” Healy wrote. ..
The definition of “qualified adult” in a region is asked whether it includes NWT residents who are pregnant or lactating, have an immunodeficiency, or have an autoimmune disease. Only this week Dr. Kandra told me that I could go ahead and get the vaccine. The department said, “We will have enough vaccines for this group as well.”
In setting NWT goals, Statistics Canada “is working with jurisdictions to address population growth for planning purposes, and modeling these figures and, if available,” Healy said. It contains both information from the community. “
But he didn’t provide the resulting numbers.
Sarah Pruys contributed to the report.
