Oxford scientists are preparing to quickly produce a new version of the vaccine to combat the more contagious COVID-19 variants found in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil, The Telegraph said. Reported on Wednesday.
The team behind the Oxford University and AstraZeneca vaccines is conducting a feasibility study to reconfigure the technology, the newspaper said, citing confirmation from Oxford University.
Scientists were working on estimating how quickly the ChAdOx vaccine platform could be reconfigured, the report said.
AstraZeneca postponed to Oxford for comment. An Oxford spokesman said the university was carefully assessing the effects of new variants on vaccine immunity and assessing the processes required for the rapid development of a coordinated COVID-19 vaccine.
Separately, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Wednesday that U.S. drug regulators will launch a new version of the COVID-19 vaccine designed to counter new variants of the potentially emerging coronavirus. He said he was ready to approve.
Recent clinical tests have shown that the COVID-19 vaccine, developed by Pfizer and its partner BioNTech SE, is likely to be effective against British variants worldwide.
BioNTech says it plans to publish a more detailed analysis of the potential effects of the vaccine on South African variants within a few days.
AstraZeneca Plc, Moderna Inc, and CureVac NV are also testing whether each shot is protected from the rapidly spreading variants.
