Covid: Dorset patients transferred to Exeta Nightingale Hospital
The number of Dorset Covid-19 patients will be treated at Exeter’s Nightingale Hospital in the coming days.
The facility has up to 10 beds to help relieve intense pressure on the pool. Bournemouth hospital.
More beds may be released.
This is part of mutual aid activities in the Southwest.
Infection rates in the BCP area remain nearly three times higher than in Devon.
There are approximately 350-380 Covid patients in the two metropolitan areas described as “absolutely full” and “knife edge.”
Ruth Williamson, radiologist and deputy chief medical officer at Dorset University Hospital, said:
“The situation is still very difficult.”
“It makes sense to share resources in the current situation,” she added.
Dr. Williamson said he was discussing with patients and their families whether the possibility of transfer was correct, accepted and appropriate.
“I am confident that patients will receive quality care.
“Meeting their needs at Covid’s specialty facility, which is effectively an infectious disease hospital, rather than a general hospital, will be absolutely focused care.
“I think this alleviates the fact that they take two hours from home.”
Patients receiving complex professional care due to other conditions are not suitable for transfer.
“But patients who have had a heart attack or stroke before, or who are being treated for diabetes, can definitely be taken care of there.”
