University of California, San Diego developing face mask sensors to detect coronavirus
The National Institutes of Health has awarded the University of California, San Diego $ 1.3 million to develop a small wearable sensor that can determine if a person has a coronavirus or has been exposed to the coronavirus by someone else. ..

If there is a positive reading, the mask user will be tested to confirm the infection. Results will be available almost immediately. The sensor is also intended to be useful for contact tracing.
“This will be a way to identify the outbreak early,” said Jesse Jokerst, a UCSD nanoengineering professor who leads the project. “We are diverting what people already wear to monitor some kind of environment.”
The test strip, which may be available later this year, is a variation of what UCSD is already doing to detect and stop the spread of the coronavirus.
Last fall, the university began installing sensors in its wastewater system to monitor the presence of viruses in the sewage from certain buildings. If there are positive measurements, UCSD warns people who may have been using the building at a particular time and asks them to be tested for coronavirus.
