TDH: Two more contagious COVID-19 strains previously found in Tennessee
Nashville, Tennessee (WKRN) —The Tennessee Department of Health has published two confirmed cases of a more contagious strain of COVID-19 in Tennessee.
According to the Ministry of Health, this is one of a total of seven specimens sent to the CDC for confirmation.
Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University Medical Center said that mutant strains need to be specially tested beyond the usual COVID-19-infected nasal swabs.
“If you pick up a new strain here and send it to a specialized laboratory, you’re more likely to find it. The more you look, the more you’ll find it,” Schaffner said.
According to Schaffner, the symptoms are the same, but they are highly contagious and can kill far more than recently seen with the original COVID-19 strain.
The processing process is the same as the 14-day quarantine. Schaffner said the best protection has not changed when it comes to wearing masks, increasing social distance and avoiding groups.
The SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1.7 strain confirmed by the CDC was first discovered in the United Kingdom in September and soon became the predominant COVID-19 strain in the region.
