Bleed says San Francisco may be able to resume as soon as new infections diminish
San Francisco Mayor London Breed said Friday that the coronavirus infection rate has fallen and could be resumed soon.
Bleed tweeted that San Francisco could soon break out of the blockade by state order because of the so-called reproductive rate of 0.99. Reproductive rate represents the number of people an infected person can infect with the virus.
“That means that for everyone infected with COVID-19, on average, less than one other person is infected. It’s slowing the spread,” Breed said.
“If it’s less than 1, it’s okay,” said Dr. Lee Riley, an infectious disease expert at the University of California, Berkeley. Told the chronicle last year. “But the rate of decline is certainly related to how much the reproductive count is below 1. The smaller the number, the faster the epidemic ends.”
San Francisco can only begin reopening when the state has a green light throughout the Bay Area. According to California guidelines, the area can be reopened if the intensive care unit capacity is expected to reach at least 15% availability within four weeks. The Sacramento region was recently allowed to reopen based on these indicators.
Bay Area ICU availability is currently 6.6%. Infection is declining throughout the region. The 7-day average for new cases in 9 counties was 49.8 per 100,000 on 21 January, down from 60.9 per 100,000 on 14 January.
The reproductive rate of COVID-19 in San Francisco has returned to less than 1 to 0.99.
This means that for everyone who has a COVID-19, they are giving it to less than one other person on average. It is delaying the spread.
If this continues, it may be possible to resume immediately according to CA guidelines.

Bleed added that San Francisco needs to remain vigilant despite signs of encouragement. “But we all need to continue to know that it slows the spread of this virus. Wear masks, avoid indoor gatherings with people who do not live with you, and around others.
