Here are three basic reasons why couple counseling with a narcissist is destined to fail — and may cause even more harm.
1. Narcissists do not want to change.

What happens when abusive people seek treatment? That’s exactly the question my colleague and I investigated in the Love Fraud Therapy Satisfaction Survey.
A total of 544 people have been completed. Of them, 281 respondents, including 26 men, described their experiences in one or more sessions of couple therapy.

So what should you expect if you go to a couple counseling with a self-euphoric partner?
Of the survey respondents, 30% reported that their partners were supportive and 28% said their partners were not.
65% said their partners were attractive and 51% said they were blaming them. In addition, 53% said their partners tried to manage the session.
We also asked the abusive partners if they tried to ally the therapists with the survey respondents.
13% said “no”, 19% “sometimes”, 17% “medium” and 52% “very”.
Narcissists, people with antisocial qualities, and rarely psychopaths are manipulators — And that’s exactly what they do in treatment. They attract therapists, blame you, try to control the session, and work to bring the therapists to their side against you.
Unfortunately, they often succeed.
“It was easy to get the therapist to think that I was a problem because it was so unstable, so calm and attractive during the session,” said one respondent.
Why do some therapists overlook the operation?
3. Many therapists do not really understand the abusive personality traits.
In the same survey, respondents were asked if their partners were characteristic of ASPD or psychopathies. DSM-5 alternative model (AMPD) for personality disorder.
Measured properties included coldness, aggression, maneuverability, hostility, dishonesty, narcissism, irresponsibility, recklessness, and impulsivity.
Survey respondents’ ratings showed that in most cases partners were highly characterized by these disorders.
However, only 20% of respondents identified the disability, saying the therapist “understood.” An additional 24% said the therapist recognized the partner’s disability to some extent or moderately.
Fifty-five percent of respondents said the therapist did not identify a partner’s disability.
Further analysis showed that when therapists were knowledgeable about narcissistic personality disorder, survey respondents felt more positive about the treatment they received.
“The fact that the therapist identified the behavior was very helpful,” wrote one respondent.
If you are thinking about couple therapy, It could be because there is a dispute in your relationship. You want it to be more harmonious and affectionate. You want a change in your relationship.
But people with narcissistic personality disorders don’t want to change. Evidence can be found in the next survey question.
“Obviously I was the problem. He didn’t have to change,” wrote one survey respondent.
Another person said, “My partner was one-way with the therapist at our meeting, but as soon as he left the door, he returned to normal behavior.”
This is further evidence that couple counseling with narcissists does not work.
If you find your partner confused, the best thing you can do is end your involvement.
