Island Health Makes Difficult Choices on Vaccines and “Lifeboat Riders” – BC Local News
COVID-somnia is a new term that has begun to appear in the medical literature, says Dr. Richard Stanwick. This is a phenomenon he is familiar with personally.
Island Health’s chief medical officer said at a press conference Wednesday, January 27, he noticed that he was awake in the middle of the night, worried about the number of cases and recent vaccine deployments.
Island Health plans mass vaccinations in 33 different Vancouver Island communities. However, things are not planned accurately due to the lack of vaccine doses.
“It’s really disappointing because we had a really good plan to deploy it to the most vulnerable people in order to really dull the chances of seeing us happening,” Stanwix said. .. “If more vaccines were available and could be delivered sooner, we wouldn’t have seen 500 cases in the last two weeks.”
According to doctors, Island Health has provided 24,065 doses of vaccine to date, immunizing all residents who wish to be vaccinated at nursing homes and licensed living support facilities. Individuals with acute care who are eligible for long-term placement are in the next row of vaccines.
In the process, Island Health and the First Nations Health Authority worked together to attempt to respond to and manage the outbreak, changing priorities such as vaccination of members of the Snuneymuxw First Nations and the elderly of Cowichan Tribes.
Island Health is also coordinating vaccination plans for healthcare professionals. Stanwix said it “must be distributed now” to workers who are dealing with cases of COVID-19 or who are most likely to come into contact with COVID patients.
“We’ve come to the point where we may have to distribute COVID units only to hospitals with them,” Stanwix said. “The big frustration is the degree of vaccines for those who board lifeboats and those who leave lifeboats, which we didn’t expect to face so early.”

Health officials do not expect Pfizer vaccine to be low in the next two weeks and low in the third week. According to Stanwix, the supply of Moderna vaccine seems to be safer, but Island Health does not know the exact dose until it is delivered.
Due to the delay in the vaccine, health authorities are continually reassessing the timing of the second vaccination. According to Stanwix, virologists believe that booster immunization may be okay six weeks after the first dose. This is what health officials say “protects the largest number of people, is fair and consistent throughout the state.”
The arrival of COVID mutants is also a concern, as more contagious viruses change previous calculations for herd immunity. Stanwix also said that 1 in 20 people are not immune after two vaccinations, so other health and safety precautions continue to be important.
Despite the reasons for COVID-insomnia About the number of cases, Stanwix said Vancouver Island is “still in an enviable position” and Island Health is preparing as if the vaccine maker had completed the delivery.
“We really hope to be able to provide more vaccines to more people,” he said. “When is the only problem?”
