A South African coronavirus mutant detected in the United States. All three variants are “probably” already in Massachusetts.
Massachusetts infectious disease experts said that all three more infectious COVID-19 mutants could already be in Bay, as the first case of a coronavirus variant from South Africa was confirmed in the United States on Thursday. I warned that it was highly likely.
The British variant is the only COVID-19 variant found in Massachusetts. Earlier this week, a Brazilian variant was detected in Minnesota and a South African variant was detected in South Carolina, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday.
Dr. Todd Elerin, director of infectious diseases at South Shore Health, said all three variants were “probably” already prevalent in Massachusetts.
Ellerin said the South Carolina variant had nothing to do with travel.
“If you’re picking up these variants with an individual who hasn’t traveled, you have to assume that the community is expanding,” he added. “I don’t know how widespread it is …. I need to make sure I have a robust COVID-19 sequencing program.”
Three cases of UK COVID-19 mutants were detected in Massachusetts. According to the Public Health Service, all three cases are travel related.
According to DPH, there is no evidence of a variant from South Africa in Massachusetts.
“Surveillance consists of some genomic sequencing of COVID-19-positive samples,” DPH said in a statement.
According to the CDC, as with the UK and Brazilian variants, preliminary data suggest that South African variants can spread more easily and quickly than other variants.
Dr. Simone Wild, an infectious disease doctor at South Shore Health, said it wouldn’t be surprising if all three variants were in Massachusetts. She said there are probably many cases that authorities have not yet identified.
“It’s not a shock at all when announced here,” Wilds said, adding that she was “very worried” about the variant.
“It’s definitely worrisome now that it’s approaching home after seeing what’s happening in variants around the world,” she said.
Early reports indicate that the variants are less deadly. However, if more people are infected because the variants are more contagious, the chances of more hospitalizations and deaths increase, Wilds said.
She emphasized that people need to strictly follow public health measures, including proper wearing of masks, social distance, and vaccination when they are eligible for it.
“We need to investigate more and implement public health measures to minimize the effects of the virus,” Wilds said. “Now is a good time to stay at home.”
She added that an additional mask layer for protection does no harm.
