Delaware updates its guidance on the second vaccination. How long can you wait?
Delaware residents waiting for a second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine can wait up to six weeks between vaccinations, according to new guidance released Thursday by state health officials.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last week updated the timeline available between the first and second doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the Modana COVID-19 vaccine.
Authorities recommend that the second dose be as close as possible to the recommended interval (21 days for Pfizer-BioNTech, 28 days for Moderna), but the vaccine is up to 6 days after the first dose. It is scheduled to be administered in a week.
“Currently, there are limited data on the efficacy of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine administered beyond this window.” According to a CDC study..
Following that guidance, on Thursday, the Delaware Department of Public Health announced a change in its approach to a second dose.
“Given the very limited supply of vaccines, DPH recommends that vaccine partners schedule a second dose between 28 and 35 days after the first dose. “We will,” DPH said in a press release.
The department of public health authorities said They are focused on the first dose To reduce current COVID-19-related hospitalizations and deaths.
“This policy will allow the state to continue the first dose to vulnerable people aged 65 and over who are at the highest risk of hospitalization and death,” the ministry said. “Science shows that the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine provides 52% to 80% protection.”
These numbers vary from vaccine to vaccine and are not in the general range for everyone who receives the first dose. A December study of the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that the first dose of Pfizer was 52% effective. On the other hand, Moderna showed 80% effectiveness.
The story of the New York Times Israeli vaccination efforts A “significant reduction in infection” was reported after a single dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
Unless federal guidance changes, the state “promises to ensure that all Delaware people receive a second dose by day 42.”
Downtrend: COVID-19 cases, tendency to be hospitalized in Delaware
As of noon on Thursday, more than 87,000 people have been vaccinated in Delaware at least once, and the state has more than 33,000 more vaccinations.
DPH is the highest risk for state and partners to resume vaccination of Phase 1A healthcare workers, provide patient care, and maintain close contact with infected personnel, school nurses, and healthcare professionals. Said to give priority to those.
According to the DPH, doses will be delivered to the county’s emergency medical unit on Friday, and a vaccination event limited to emergency personnel will be planned on Monday, with appointments made through the first responding agency. This happened last week after the Emergency Medical Services Department notified the first responder of all previously scheduled second vaccination dates. Paused until later notified..

According to DPH, additional Phase 1A individuals will be notified of the opportunity to receive a second dose after the DPH has scheduled these events, either through the association or through contact from the expert regulation department.
Those who receive the first vaccination do not need to receive the second vaccination at the same location or through the same provider, but those who receive the Pfizer vaccine should not be vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine. DPH encourages people to keep their vaccine cards to ensure they know which vaccine they received and when.
DPH said it plans to offer a second dose option to elderly people in Phase 1B. Vaccinated at a departmental event Over the last two weeks.
“DPH will contact these individuals and schedule a second dose using CDC’s VAMS appointment system, which was used to schedule the first dose, or before the registration system goes live. Information will be provided for those who have been vaccinated. de.gov/covidvaccine Or through a community partner. “
