ND Influenza Monitoring Coordinator Tracks Slower Than Normal Influenza Season

BISMARCK — This flu season was a “later than usual” season. This is probably due to precautionary measures taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19, such as wearing a mask and physical distance.

The Minnesota Department of Health reports 27 hospitalizations for influenza this season.

During the flu season 2019-2020, 4,022 people were hospitalized for the flu.

Influenza has killed three people in Minnesota during the flu season. Last season, 153 people died of the flu in the state.

The situation is almost the same in North Dakota.

Levi Schlosser, influenza monitoring coordinator for the North Dakota Department of Health, said 148 influenza cases and 13 hospitalizations have been confirmed in the state since the start of the season early last fall.

He said five people have died of the flu in the state so far and the season is just a few months away.

In contrast, the state reports 998 deaths from pneumonia. Many were due to COVID-19 infection.

For comparison, Schlosser said there were four flu deaths and 206 pneumonia deaths at this point in the previous flu season.
