RRMC Health Talk: Pregnancy and COVID-19 Vaccine | Weekend Magazine

The COVID-19 pandemic raises concerns among pregnant patients. Our responsibility as a female healthcare provider is to reassure patients and provide guidance for the health of the developing foetation.

We will continue to recognize and emphasize the importance of infection prevention measures such as hand washing, physical distance and wearing masks. It is also highly recommended that pregnant women limit their relationships with non-family members in line with the current emergency order of the Governor of Vermont. These measures work to keep the mother safe and protect the foetation.

Pregnant women do not appear to be at increased risk of contracting COVID-19, but the data show that pregnant women infected with COVID-19 have more severe consequences than their non-pregnant peers. It suggests that the risk of is slightly higher. This includes the high risk of needing care in the intensive care unit. Pregnant women with other symptoms such as obesity and diabetes may be at even higher risk of serious illness due to COVID-19. Because pregnancy is a risk factor for COVID-19, the CDC has included pregnant women in the deployment of Phase 1c or Phase 3 vaccines. Most pregnant women (90%) infected with COVID-19 have no significant adverse effects.

Rutland Women’s Healthcare recommends that pregnant and lactating patients be vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it becomes available. This recommendation is supported by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG).

Currently, there are two vaccines available from two manufacturers, Pfizer and Moderna. Both have been shown to be 95% effective in preventing COVID-19 disease after the second dose. And, like most vaccines, it takes days or weeks for a person to fully establish the immune response needed to protect them from the virus. The expected side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine, such as malaise, headache, muscle pain, chills, and joint pain, are short-lived but normal responses to the vaccine. This is the signal that the body is reacting to by developing antibodies to protect it from viruses. The vaccine itself does not contain a living virus, but it reflects the virus and triggers the body’s immune response.

Based on data reviewed from Phase II and Phase III clinical trials, we expect the vaccine to be equally safe and effective for pregnant and non-pregnant women. And given the increased risk of COVID-19 exposure during this pandemic and the increased risk to pregnant women, pregnant women can protect themselves and their foets from being infected with COVID-19. It is advisable to do as much as you can. For more information on the COVID-19 vaccine and pregnancy, please visit: www.acog.org Be sure to consult your provider.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless.
