Breast cancer overtakes the lungs as the most common cancer-WHO
Geneva (Reuters)-Breast cancer has overtaken lung cancer as the most common form of the disease, accounting for nearly 12% of new cases worldwide each year, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.
“For the first time, breast cancer is now the most common cancer in the world,” WHO cancer expert Andre Ilbawi told a UN briefing prior to Thursday’s World Cancer Day.
Lung cancer has been the most common type in the last two decades, but is now second only to colorectal cancer, which is the third most prevalent, Ilbawi said.
The WHO said in a statement last year that an estimated 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed, accounting for 11.7% of all cancer cases. “Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women and is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide,” he said.
