British coronavirus strain reaches San Clemente, authorities warn
San Clemente, CA-A man in San Clemente tested positive for a highly contagious British coronavirus strain, which was the first case in Orange County, a healthcare agency reported Monday.
On January 26, a 21-year-old woman was tested positive for the strain, Dr. Clayton Chau said in a memo to Orange County’s supervisory board.
According to Chau, residents of San Clemente had no history of traveling abroad and were not considered part of the outbreak.
Although his identity was not revealed due to health regulations, healthcare professionals are still tracking his close contact and “checking for evidence of infection,” Chau said.
The man had recently been to Big Bear, where tension was also detected, so the State Public Health Service notified Orange County Healthcare over the weekend.
It is not yet known how he was infected with the British coronavirus strain. He is one of 150 confirmed cases in California, most of which are in San Diego, says Chow.
“South African variants appear to be more toxic, and AstraZeneca vaccines have been reported to be less effective,” said Frank Kim, CEO of Orange County.
In a memo, Chau said Brazilian stocks have also been detected in the United States.
“All of these variants appear to spread more easily, faster and more contagiously, which could increase the number of cases of COVID-19,” Chau told City News Service.
Andrew Neumer, a professor of population health and disease prevention at the University of California, Irvine, told City News Services that public health experts assume that new strains already exist in the area.
“The only thing that’s amazing is what has happened so far,” he said.
“I’ve known for weeks that the same stock is in San Diego and Los Angeles. If it’s in San Diego and Los Angeles, do the math. It’s here,” he said.
A case of coronavirus could occur in March, Neumer said.
He said South African strains “worried because they seem to be avoiding some vaccines.” The vaccine works on British strains, and according to Noymer, “it is important to prioritize vaccination as soon as possible and as soon as possible before it becomes established.”
