Too much night light can increase your chances of having thyroid cancer
Researchers compared satellite imagery data (to estimate nighttime light levels at each participant’s address) with data from state cancer registries up to 2011.
They found 856 cases of thyroid cancer in more than 464,000 participants, all of whom were followed up for about 13 years on average. Those cases included 384 men and 472 women.
Researchers reported that people living in up to 20% of the nocturnal light category had a 55% higher risk of developing thyroid cancer than people living in at least 20% of brackets. The risk was primarily found in the most common form of thyroid cancer called papillary thyroid cancer.
Researchers also found that women were more relevant than men. They found that for women, localized cancers with no signs of spreading to other parts of the body were more relevant.
In men, it was more relevant at the more advanced stages of cancer. This association was similar for various tumor sizes and participant demographics, such as sociodemographic characteristics and obesity index (body weight).
So how can night light spur thyroid cancer?
According to Xiao’s group, night light suppresses natural melatonin, a modulator of estrogen activity. Too little melatonin activity may help reduce the body’s ability to fight tumors, they said. Night light can also disturb the body’s circadian rhythm, which is also a risk factor for cancer, the researchers said.
