Mayo Clinic to use new treatments for COVID-19 patients
WEAU, Wisconsin-More than 700 people in the Chipewa Valley are being treated with the monoclonal antibody COVID-19 by the Mayo Clinic Health System.
Since the FDA approved an emergency use authorization for treatment in November 2020, the healthcare system has been using it to treat high-risk viral patients.
Monoclonal antibody therapy is designed to keep people away from the hospital. According to the FDA, these are laboratory-made proteins designed to mimic the ability of the immune system to fight off harmful pathogens such as viruses.
Lori Arnto, a medical assistant at Mayo Clinic’s Eau Claire, said he intended to kickstart the immune system.
“Prevents the virus from adhering to cells and developing severe COVID symptoms,” she said.
In mid-January, Bob and Joyce Waxmus were COVID-19 positive. Bob Waxmas, 70, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a type of lung disease. After his positive test, a Mayo Clinic doctor looked at his file and advised him to receive a monoclonal antibody.
“I had these underlying things, so I was relieved that this was available to me and would probably speed up my recovery, keep me away from the hospital, and shorten my stay.” Said Bob Waxmas.
Joyce Waxmas, 67, a survivor of the cancer, was also eligible for treatment. As a retired nurse, she never thought twice about whether to receive treatment.
“I had so much pain in my body and joints that anything that gave me relief was very much appreciated,” she said.
Hours after receiving the one-hour infusion, Joyce Wachsmuth said the pain began to subside.
“It was very quick for those monoclonal antibodies to do their job,” she said.
But the most important thing for Bob and Joyce Waxmas is that they are feeling better.
“COVID is only three weeks old, but when you look at it all, it feels like it was a hit,” Joyce Wachsmuth said.
“I feel good. As I said, it doesn’t feel like that short time,” said Bob Wachsmuth.
Arndt said the majority of patients who received monoclonal antibodies avoided hospitalization.
The patient receives an IV drip at the hospital but can return home the same day.
Patients receiving monoclonal antibodies must wait 90 days before receiving the COVID-19 vaccine, Arnto said.
