London: A team of researchers have developed a smartphone app that may help people who want to work on their personality.
The majority of participants who used the app for three months said they wanted to reduce emotional vulnerability and increase integrity and extroversion.
Those who participated in the intervention for more than 3 months reported that they were more successful in achieving the change goals than the control group who participated in only 2 months. This shows the findings published in the Bulletin of the National Academy of Sciences.
“Participants and their friends reported that the personality changes brought about by the use of the app continued three months after the intervention,” said Matthias Alemand, a researcher at the University of Zurich in Switzerland.
“These amazing results show that we are not only slaves to our personality, but that we can deliberately change our daily experiences and behavioral patterns,” Alemand added.
Studies show that personality traits such as integrity and sociality are patterns of experience and behavior that can change throughout our lives.
Individual changes usually occur slowly as people gradually adapt to social and environmental demands. However, it is unclear whether certain personality traits can be psychologically affected in a short-term and targeted manner.
In this study, the team was attended by about 1,500 participants and a specially developed smartphone app called PEACH was offered for three months, allowing researchers to see if their personality changed and how it changed. I evaluated what I did.
Five major personality traits were examined: openness, integrity, sociability (extroversion), compassion (cooperativeness), and emotional fragility (neurotic personality).
The app included elements of knowledge transfer, action and resource activation, introspection, and progress feedback. Virtually all communication with digital coaches and companions (chatbots) took place.
Close friends and family also observed changes in participants who wanted to increase the expression of certain personality traits. However, for those who wanted to reduce the expression of traits, people near them barely noticed the change.
The app was developed as a research tool. However, in the future, research apps such as PEACH are expected to become widely available.
