Socio-economic conditions associated with multiple organ inflammatory syndrome in children
(HealthDay)-Low Socioeconomic Status (SES), High Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), and Racial / Ethnic Minorities are high in pediatrics, according to a study published online on February 18. It is associated with Organ Inflammation Syndrome (MIS-C). Pediatrics.
Karina Javalkar, MD and colleagues at Boston Children’s Hospital have three academic disciplines from January 1st to September 1st, 2020 to characterize socio-economic and racial / ethnic disparities affecting MIS-C. A retrospective case-control study was conducted at the center. Cases of MIS-C were compared with 5 controls. Children At COVID-19, those who were evaluated by MIS-C but did not meet the case criteria, those who were hospitalized for febrile illness, those with Kawasaki disease, and children in Massachusetts. We investigated the association between SES, SVI, race and ethnicity and MIS-C diagnosis and clinical severity.
Forty-three children were diagnosed with MIS-C. 44%, 26% and 28% were Hispanic, black and white respectively. 51% and 53% were the lowest quartile of SES and the highest quartile of SVI, respectively. Researchers have identified the lowest SES quartile (odds ratio 2.2), the highest SVI quartile (odds ratio 2.8), and race / association.Minority With MIS-C diagnosis. No association was observed between SES, SVI, or race / ethnicity and disease severity.
