Extended COVID-19 test in the Waterloo area provides more accurate numbers
According to local health officer Dr Hsiu-Li Wang, the priority group for coronavirus testing has been expanded, adding some vulnerable groups and essential workers to the list.
The announcement is accompanied by a new total of 399 COVID-19 positive cases in the Waterloo area on April 17, an increase of 20 in 24 hours and another two deaths in the same time frame. According to public health, both were residents of Kitcheners Forest Heights Rivera, aged over 70.
Deaths from people who tested positive for COVID-19 resulted in a total of 5 Forest Heights and 19 in the region.
Despite the current figures, Wang noted that earlier expansion of testing to long-term care facilities is beginning to have a positive effect. The increase in numbers is based on the time between one and two weeks between the virus being infected and the onset of symptoms.
“I’m starting to see some signs of (stabilization),” she said.
“But we need to be very vigilant. We don’t know we’re out of the forest until we do. So we’re now very seriously focused on that. And that’s what we continue to do is the daily monitoring. ”
Extending the test to the previous priority list includes symptomatic people living in the same household as health care workers, including those employed in caregivers, nursing homes or first responders, and chemotherapy, hemodialysis. Certain vulnerable groups, including patients undergoing treatment, and transplants are required.
Similarly, pregnant people, newborns, cross-border workers, and mandatory workers defined by the state are given priority.
This list includes testing groups that are already prioritized in long-term care facilities and vulnerable groups such as hospital inpatients, healthcare workers, caregivers, caregivers, paramedics, police, fire departments, and indigenous communities. Homeless shelters and group homes as well, with people who live in a “meeting environment”.
Prioritized people can be evaluated and tested at two community assessment centers in the area through appointments and referrals from primary care providers.
