Recovered Washington Coronavirus Patient Asked to Donate Blood
Seattle, WA—The Department of Health, in collaboration with Bloodworks Northwest, called for plasma donations from patients who successfully recovered from Washington’s new coronavirus.
The state works with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to contact each patient, verify their health, and then run tests to determine the levels of antibodies present in the blood.
“When someone gets a virus, their bodies make antibodies or proteins that help the immune system kill the virus,” the Health Department wrote in a news release. “Plasma is part of the blood that contains these antibodies. Those who have been previously infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 may have antibodies specific to the virus.”
State health officials say that treating patients with plasma donated by previously sick people has been used successfully for other infectious diseases and before vaccines and other treatments become available. He said it could be an effective treatment.
