Colorado reports a significant reduction in serious influenza cases
Denver (AP) —Colorado reports a significant reduction in influenza deaths and hospitalizations as part of public health measures aimed at preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
The Department of State’s Department of Public Health and Environment reported a total of 24 hospitalizations for influenza between September 27 and February 20.
More than 2,400 people were hospitalized around this time of the flu season last year. The state reported a total of 3,546 influenza hospitalizations throughout the 2019-20 influenza season.
According to the State Health Department, this year’s flu season will continue until May 22nd.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, influenza has killed three people so far this season, but 143 people died during the 2019-2020 season.
“I’ve never seen this much flu,” said Larissa Pisney, medical director of infection prevention and management at the UC Health University of Colorado Hospital. “This is certainly unprecedented.”
According to The Denver Post, the decline in influenza cases is attributed to multiple factors, including coronavirus-related health conditions and the fact that many pandemics do not allow children to go to school directly. The newspaper reported that schools are one of the most common places for influenza to spread.
In addition, influenza vaccination this season has increased by 13.5% from last year.
Pisney emphasized that the coronavirus is much more infectious, leads to more hospitalizations and is more deadly than influenza.
According to the State Health Department, nearly 6,000 people have died and more than 23,000 have been hospitalized in Colorado as a result of the coronavirus since the pandemic began. That’s more than 40 times the number of deaths and more than 6 times the number of hospitalizations the state said was caused by the flu in the 2019-20 season.
