Children exposed to cigarette smoke may be at risk of high blood pressure – Boston news, weather, sports
(CNN) — Children exposed to cigarette smoke are more likely to have high blood pressure, a new study found.
Researchers found that 6% of children exposed to cigarette smoke had high blood pressure, compared to 4% of children who were not exposed. Studies show It was released on Tuesday at the JAMA Network Open.
In this study, tobacco exposure was defined as a child who reported smoking, lived with a smoker, or had serum cotinine levels. It measures recent exposure to nicotine and exceeds 0.05 micrograms per liter.
Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2016. Of the 8,520 children aged 8 to 19 years surveyed, 3,690 (43%) were exposed to cigarette smoke.
A high proportion of exposed children are concerned, said Dr. Karen Wilson, chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Tobacco Consortium, who was not involved in the study.

Wilson said he had heard reports of increased smoking of cigarettes and marijuana indoors since the pandemic began. This could increase the number of exposed children if both parents and neighbors live close to others, Wilson said.
“If someone can’t go out and smoke because of Covid’s quarantine or blockade, they’re likely to smoke in an apartment or home,” Wilson said.
Levy said he wants parents to know more about how often they smoke around their children.

Levy said parents should use this time as an opportunity to educate their children about the negative effects of smoking and encourage them to resist pressure from their peers.
Wilson said parents who want to protect their children from indirect smoking should consider quitting smoking because it is “the best thing they can do for their own health and their children’s health.”
According to Wilson, smokers who want to quit smoking have a number of resources, including nicotine replacement therapy and other medications. She said she believes that the key to preventing children from being exposed in the future is to reduce overall smoking rates.
