Very low COVID infection rate for dental hygienists
Thursday, February 25, 2021 (HealthDay News)-A new study states that dental hygienists have a low incidence of COVID-19, even though they are considered to be at high risk for work.
The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has declared hygienists at high risk for COVID-19, so researchers decided to investigate.
They analyzed survey data collected in October from approximately 4,800 dental hygienists in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
According to the February issue of the survey, only 3.1% of hygienists said they had been diagnosed with COVID-19, and no one was sick in any area. Journal of Dental Hygiene..
The results of these first findings were published on February 24 by the American Association of Dental Hygienists (ADHA) and the American Dental Association (ADA).
The COVID-19 rate for dental hygienists is similar to that for dentists, well below that of other healthcare professionals in the United States. It’s a little higher than the average person.

According to a related survey, 8% of US dental hygienists have left the workforce since the pandemic began. Nearly 60% of them voluntarily resigned due to concerns about safety, pandemics, childcare issues, and so on.
