Instead of producing healthy, mature blood cells, the bone marrow makes abnormal, immature blood cells that accumulate in the body and diffuse into the blood to overrun normal blood cells. The body cannot function properly without mature blood cells.
Sequele sneaks into a lesson on the history of leukemia and its treatment, as he describes his patient’s journey. And he’s having a tough conversation with his colleagues, patients, their loved ones, overlooking the killer circulating in their own network of bones and veins.
The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society estimates that nearly 400,000 people in the United States are in remission from leukemia. Treatment options are more robust and diverse than ever, and the survival rate has more than quadrupled since the 1960s, but only about 63 in 100 leukemia patients have been diagnosed five years ago.
Near the end of the book, Sequeles remembers a patient who presented him with a top 10 list of phrases she told her during treatment. She didn’t survive. “The words we use when talking about leukemia are more than we know at the time,” Sequeles meditates.
