Massachusetts coronavirus cases increased by 1,677 and test positives remained low
Health officials on Friday reported 25 new virus deaths and 1,677 new cases as major coronavirus metrics continued to show improvement following the sharp peak in January.
The state’s estimated number of active cases is currently 27,382, down from 98,750 in early January. The current estimated number of less than 28,000 is about the same as the November 13 count before the holiday surge.
Hospitalizations throughout the state are declining. Hospitalizations on Friday decreased by 25 to a total of 716.
There are 180 patients in the ICU and 109 have been intubated.
Of the total death toll of 16,321 in the state, 8,652 were reported in long-term care facilities, an increase of 5 from Thursday.
The state’s 7-day weighted average test positive rate is 1.82%. The September low was only 0.8%, but the current rate is significantly lower than the staggering 31% in March last year, when testing was very limited.
The World Health Organization threshold for resuming the economy is a test positive rate of 5%.
As of Friday, 83.6% of hospital beds in the state are occupied and 75% of ICU beds are in use.
Also on Friday, the State Public Health Service announced that Missouri, Oregon, and Washington have been added to the list of low-risk states for travel orders in Massachusetts.

Travelers arriving from these states will no longer have to fill out Massachusetts travel forms and follow quarantine rules based on travel orders.
