Vaccinated groups will continue to wait while Iowa’s health department plans
Cedar Rapids, Iowa (KCRG)-Healthcare workers said the news that people under the age of 64, who are in poor health, could be vaccinated from Monday is a sign of hope.
But they said the change from the state surprised the health sector.
The St. Luke’s Hospital Intensive Care Unit has been home to the Kellyfeld House for the past 23 years. Last year, the fight against the pandemic was one of the most difficult.

Regaining the vaccine in January was the first glimpse of her hope. Now, she said moving to the next group, under the age of 64, was another big step. Especially for her husband, Bill, who suffers from high blood pressure and asthma.
“I was very happy,” Bill said. “There is no question about its safety. All the research they did was short-lived, but thousands of people have been working on vaccines for a long time.”
The couple worked in a hospital during a pandemic to see what the virus could do. Bill was already trying to get his first shot.
“I called and tried to sign up, but unfortunately it’s all gone,” Bill said.
He wasn’t the only one in this new group who couldn’t get the vaccine. On Friday, Linn County Public Health Department Heathermere Doll said all 3,600 doses received this week were spoken, and the state did not give them sufficient notice.
“If you don’t know these are coming out and you can’t plan ahead, it puts a strain on it,” Meador said. “That’s what we do in public health. We are informed, planning and working to protect our communities.”
Meador said he will be working this weekend to plan a new group starting next Monday. Bill kept waiting for his turn, but he and Kelly knew that the vaccine didn’t mean the pandemic was over.
“We still have to keep fighting,” Kelly said. As the community becomes more open, it is still important to stay socially distant, wash hands and wear masks. “
