Blindness and visual impairment closely associated with increased risk of death: study

Researchers have conducted a new meta-analysis that reveals that blindness and visual impairment are closely associated with an increased risk of death. This prompted the need to address global eye health inequalities.

Researchers say in a study published in The Lancet Global Health that the world’s population is aging and their eyes are aging.

They estimated that the number of people with vision impairment and blindness would more than double in the next 30 years.

This study analyzed 48,000 people who participated in 17 different studies. They found that people with more severe vision impairment had a higher risk of death from all causes than those with normal or mild vision impairment.

According to the data, participants with mild vision impairment had a 29% higher risk of death compared to normal vision. The risk for people with severe visual impairment increases to 89%.

In particular, four of the five cases of vision impairment can be prevented or corrected. Globally, both major causes of vision loss and blindness are avoidable: cataracts and the unfulfilled need for eyeglasses, the authors pointed out.

The lead authors of this study, Joshua Ehrlich, MD, and MPH, sought to better understand the link between visual impairment and mortality from all causes.

Ehrlich’s study highlighted the effects of later vision impairment on health and well-being, including its effects on dementia, depression, and loss of independence.
