Turkey’s COVID-19 cases hit a two-month high one week after the curb was alleviated.
Istanbul (Reuters)-Turkey’s new coronavirus cases per day rose to a two-month high of nearly 14,000 on Tuesday, Ministry of Health data showed.
The number of new cases was 13,755, the highest level since January 6, and the total number of cases was 2,807,387.
Last Monday, Prime Minister Erdogan announced that he would ease the weekend blockade in the partial opening of cafes, restaurants and schools and what he called “controlled normalization.”
The number of cases per day on the day was less than 10,000.
Cafe and restaurant owners, who were mostly limited to take-out services last year, have long sought to reopen in-house dining after a 65% decline in sector revenue. However, the Turkish Medical Association says it has not seen the conditions for normalization.
According to data on Tuesday, 66 people have died from COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, and the death toll has increased to 29,160.
Turkey, with a population of 83 million, has been vaccinated 10.28 million times in a campaign that began in mid-January. More than 7.7 million people received the first injection of the vaccine developed by Sinovac Biotech in China and the second inoculation of nearly 2.6 million.
