March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month: This is what you need to know to save your life
El Paso, Texas-Actor Chadwick Boseman died of colorectal cancer last August. Since March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, here are some answers to some of the questions about the disease: ABC-7 spoke with Dr. Jaime Gomez, a board-certified colon and rectal surgeon at The Hospitals of Providence. We started by asking Dr. Gomez about the importance of being screened for colorectal cancer, usually through colonoscopy.
“Screening is very important because early detection provides a 90% survival rate,” said Dr. Gomez. “Thorough screening can detect cancer before symptoms appear. Dr. Gomez explained that the early stages of colorectal cancer are usually asymptomatic. “This is why screening is so important. The good news is that colorectal cancer is very curable if detected early. Therefore, it is advisable to see a doctor and schedule a colonoscopy if you are over 45 years old.
