Professor UGA approaches COVID-19 vaccine potential-News-Athens Banner Herald
A team of researchers at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia has developed a COVID-19 vaccine candidate that has been shown to successfully boost the immune response in early test models.
The team is headed by Biao He, Fred C. Davison, Director of Veterinary Medicine at Distinguished University, and Stanley Perlman and Paul McRae from the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Iowa. Together, they developed a promising vaccine for MERS-CoV, a coronavirus that causes the Middle East respiratory syndrome, and rapidly advanced their research to focus on SARS-CoV-2.
The MERS vaccine, detailed in a study published in mBio, has successfully boosted immunity to disease in laboratory studies, giving researchers high expectations for the COVID-19 vaccine.
The vaccine is based on the virus delivery platform he developed and contains a modified strain of the virus that causes kennel cough in dogs, parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5). The modified virus produces proteins found in the two coronaviruses, specifically the spike proteins that form their named “crowns” or coronas. After vaccination, the cells become infected with the PIV5 virus. The body then begins to protect against the MERS spike proteins produced by the modified virus, ultimately promoting immunity to infection.
He has been paying attention to this virus for years because of its safety to humans. “A similar vaccine is used when a dog is immunized against a kennel cough,” he explained. “After vaccination, dogs shed this PIV5 for several days. If you have a dog, you have been safely and repeatedly exposed to this virus.”
Vaccine development is still in its early stages, but researchers hope it will succeed in further trials. He expects the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine to be ready for FDA approval by the end of the year.
