Thousands of people go to SVMH clinic for COVID-19 vaccine

Smiles, laughter, and expectations filled the room when Monterey County residents received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Since early February, staff at the Salinas Valley Memorial Healthcare System (SVMH) have given thousands of vaccines to teachers, farmers, and people over the age of 65 to fight the virus locally.

SVMH administers an average of 700 vaccines per day, 5 days a week, to make the vaccination process as efficient as possible. This helped Monterey County get closer to the red layer.

“We were trying to get people to take safety precautions,” said Karina Rusk, director of public relations and system communications at SVMH. “Now we are trying to get them vaccinated as soon as possible. Hopefully we have seen the worst of this.”

SVMH significantly reduced the number of positive COVID-19 patients from four COVID units to one COVID unit.

According to Rusk, at the height of the pandemic, there were more than 100 people in SVMH with COVID symptoms. As of yesterday, there are only two.

Rusk said Monterey County would be in a good position if people stayed socially distant, continued to wear masks, and increased vaccination eligibility.

“The feedback we get from patients is that they are very grateful and that they don’t have a lottery system,” Rusk said. “They can schedule … and it’s very reassuring to them. These are all vulnerable people at risk of getting infected with COVID-19. So it’s very nice to be here. I’m happy. “

In Monterey County, a total of 42,551 COVID-19 cases have been identified, 35 are currently hospitalized, 333 have died, and 42,395 have been released from quarantine.

SVMH works with the Taylor Farms Family Health and Wellness Center ag company to manage Johnson & Johnson vaccine batches, especially for farmers.
