Five-year-old Skyler Herbert was a girl who loved to dance and dreamed of becoming a pediatric dentist one day. Her parents said she was hilarious and lively, and fear never stopped her from trying anything new.
She is considered the youngest person to die of coronavirus positivity in Michigan.
Police officer La Vondria Herbert told NBC News that her daughter’s diagnosis was shocking because Skyler had been out for a few days. Neither she nor the firefighter’s husband, Ebby, have tested positive.
“This is out of control and we need to do something about it. That’s why we do this interview,” Ebby Herbert said. “It’s coming for you to let people know you can be as old as you want.”

Initially, Skyler’s symptoms resembled streptococcal sore throat, the mother said. The coronavirus never crossed their minds.
“She was herself-eating, drinking, playing like the first few days,” La Bondria Herbert said. “But on the fourth day, she started complaining about the headache, and fever-I couldn’t break the fever.”
Skyler had good oxygen levels and no signs of dyspnea, but was diagnosed with a rare form of meningitis due to a complication of COVID-19, a disease associated with the coronavirus. On April 3, a doctor put the Skylar on a ventilator as a precaution.
“So even the doctors were puzzled, but they really tried to reach out and find something to help her,” La Bondria Herbert said.

Skyler died on Sunday with her parents and the doctors and nurses in the pediatric intensive care unit surrounding her.
“There’s a doctor here and a nurse here,” says Ebby Herbert. “And they’re attached. They were crying. That’s hard for everyone.”

La Bondria Herbert said she couldn’t identify one of the things she missed most about her daughter, who she calls her criminal partner. She will miss her the morning when she wakes up with Skyler’s kiss and “I love you.”
“She just climbs to bed and steps on her back,” La Bondria Herbert said. “She was right, she did a lot. We’re missing so much about her.”
