Survivors of colorectal cancer urge others to prioritize colonoscopy despite the COVID pandemic
With COVID-19 taking control of the country, screening for colorectal cancer plummeted, and doctors worried that patients might be postponing life-saving preventive treatment.

Colorectal cancer was not on Melissa Peña’s radar until Melissa Pena became pregnant with her third child and was worried about persistent blood in her stool.
Screening revealed a tumor and she was successfully treated with chemotherapy before giving birth.

“I would never have guessed what it was,” Peña said. “I had no family history, so being diagnosed is a big surprise to me.”
Peña was 32 at the time, but is now screened every five years.
She said that not prioritizing self-care could mean the difference between life and death.
“Cancer won’t wait,” Peña said. “I can’t wait for this pandemic to end because I can’t wait for cancer.”
The American Cancer Society recommends that people at average risk, who have no family history of colorectal cancer, begin screening at age 45.
