Despite the side effects, it was worth getting vaccinated

I was fine last weekend. I took my youngest daughter to see the rowing regatta and picked up a lot of plants to start the garden when that happened.
I felt like I was hit by a truck.
Within 30 minutes I was feeling fine and feeling the most sick for years. First, it was extreme fatigue and the need for a nap. Then it was shivering, an looming fever, and after a two-hour nap, I woke up from a dream I felt burning. I felt I couldn’t breathe because it was so hot, but I was still trembling. My face flushed, my body temperature reached 101 degrees, and my headache got worse.
I wasn’t infected with COVID, but I had side effects from my second vaccination the night before. And as soon as it happened, my symptoms disappeared within 6 hours. I returned to normal again.
It was unpleasant to experience these side effects, but one step closer to ending this pandemic was worth 1,000 times.
There seems to be no obvious reason that some people experience the side effects of the second vaccine and others do not. My husband, who received the second vaccination the day after me, had mild muscle soreness, but otherwise he was fine. My mother, 67, had no side effects other than arm pain. My 89-year-old grandmother, who took a second shot in late February, was also fine.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, less than half of people who receive the COVID-19 vaccine experience side effects, but the side effects are slightly higher with the modelna vaccine, and women may experience them slightly.
But if COVID-19 is like a side effect, I’m even more happy to have been vaccinated.
Having been vaccinated gave me hope. It’s like seeing the light of a tunnel when you hear that almost 10% of the American population has been vaccinated with at least one COVID-19 vaccine, but it’s not there yet. You can’t give up wearing a mask or increasing your social distance yet.
Governor Kay Ivy recently extended Alabama’s Maskman Date until April 9. At this time, several other states have revoked the order. No masks are needed in Mississippi and Texas. However, despite much criticism, especially from within Ivy’s own Republican Party, Ivy once again extended his mask obligations so that more people could be vaccinated until after Easter.
“This is very good news,” said Dr. Don Williamson, head of the Alabama Hospital Association, after Ivy extended Mask’s mission. “This gives more people a month to vaccinate and better handle the role of the UK variants.”
After the decision was announced, I wrote a thank-you note to the governor. It’s not easy. If the two camps are very split and so many people, including the vice-governor, oppose the need to wear masks, extend the mission.
But the governor hopes to know that her mask mission over the past eight months has saved countless lives in Alabama. Sometimes the right decision is not easy. But as I wrote to Ivy, I hope she realizes that because of her decision, more people didn’t catch COVID-19. Thanks to masks, more people are alive than if they weren’t needed.
Hopefully this is nearing the end, but we still can’t give up on precautions. More People Need to Get Their Shots — Shots well worth any side effects.
