ST. Charles — At the Family Arena in St. Charles on Thursday, health care workers and volunteers began administering the COVID-19 vaccine to thousands of locals, despite the cold and rain.

A spokeswoman said it was expected to be the largest one-day vaccination clinic ever coordinated by the Missouri Guard, with the goal of immunizing 4,000 people.
Sherry Brown, a resident of Weldon Spring who volunteered there on Thursday, said it was difficult to see how slowly the vaccine was being distributed, especially in St. Louis.
“I felt these big events would get rid of it,” said Braun, 60.
For several weeks at the Family Arena, the county hosts indoor events that can typically provide 1,000 to 1,500 vaccinations. By moving outdoors for the first time on Thursday, the health department was able to administer higher doses.
National Guard members checked attendees’ documents and guided them to the parking lot. Each person was vaccinated and monitored for signs of side effects for 15-30 minutes. Volunteers and health workers (some wearing rain ponchos) were vaccinated. Others sat in a row of tables in the arena and entered information into ShowMeVax, the state’s vaccination recording software.
